Squashes. Cucurbita pepo (Gallery 3)

Connecticut Field
It is one of the most traditional American pumpkins for Thanksgiving pies and for Halloween decorations. The fruits range from 7 to 10 kg, are bright orange, and are not uniform in shape and size. The coarse deep-yellow flesh has mild flavor and slight sweetness. The rind is hard but thin and slightly ribbed. From direct sowing: 110 days.
This Native American heirloom has a history predating 1700. It is also known as “Big Tom” and “Yankee Cow Pumpkin”.

Custard Marrow Orange
The pretty fruits have the shape of a plump disk with bright orange skin. The young fruits can be eaten like courgettes and are best picked when 5 cm across. They can then be grated and eaten raw having the taste of an artichoke’s heart. They can be also stir-fried. When fully mature, the flesh is thick, firm and yellow and the fruits can be stuffed. They are good keepers. Bush variety.

Howden
Howden is the traditional old-time Halloween favorite. This variety has strong handles, prominent ribs and resistance to black rot. The rind is hard and bright orange. The fruits are uniformly round and large, up to 15 kg. The large spreading 3,20m vines produce 4 to 6 carving pumpkins per plant. From direct sowing: 110-115 days.
This variety was developed by John Howden in the 1970’s in the USA.

Lady Godiva
This variety is grown for its naked hulless seeds. Each plant can bear 12-15 fruits of 3-6 kg. The largest fruits can contain 500 grammes of the greenish naked seeds which are very high in proteins. Usually, the flesh of these fruits is not eaten. From direct sowing: 100-110 days.
A variety originally from the southern parts of USA and from Mexico. It is also known as “Almond Squash”.

Munchkin
The fruits are very small, 5-8 cm in diameter. It is an ideal variety to hollow out and to place small candles inside. The fruits can also be baked. The flesh is yellow-orange in colour, firm and sweet. This very productive variety is an excellent keeper, for more than one year. Each plant can produce 6 to 15 fruits which average 100-150 grammes. The fruits are often used for decoration. From direct sowing: 95 days.
A variety originally from the USA.

Table King Bush
This bush variety produces acorn type fruits which are dark green. Each plant produces 4 to 8 fruits which range from 500 grammes to 1,5 kg. The flesh has a delicate nutty flavor which improves with the keeping. It is an excellent keeper, up to 6 months.
